A telephone scam in Allen County has law enforcement officials warning residents not to fall for it. The Lima News reports residents have been getting phone calls from people calling about alleged bad debts. The targets of the scam are told that unless they pay the debt immediately they, or a loved one, will be put in jail. Victims are told to go get Green Dot Moneypak Cards from Walmart and then call back with the access number.
Of course, you can’t be put in jail for a bad debt. However Allen County Sheriff’s officials say the confusion from this scam results from the number appearing on caller ID. Residents are seeing 911 or the Allen County Sheriff’s Office number pop up on their phones. Computers can by used to spoof phone numbers on caller ID.
If you get a call like that you’re urged to hang up and call law enforcement.
