CSX is spending big money to expand its intermodal facility in North Baltimore. The Sentinel-Tribune reports the rail giant will pour $43 million into the center, which could make it one of the busiest freight facilities in the nation in the future. Currently the intermodal site can handle 650,000 containers a year. When the expansion is finished it will be able to handle more than a million.
The expansion started in the spring with the shipping area and parking lot. That project should be finished this year. Construction on two new cranes will start toward the end of this year.
CSX proposed the expansion last year and asked for federal dollars to help move forward. The money never came, but the company decided to move forward.
