Officials in Detroit want to make sure Marathon Petroleum is living up to a deal to hire more city residents. The Detroit Free Press reports the city gave Marathon a $175 million tax break for a $2.2 billion expansion project. The company pledged to recruit Detroit residents for new jobs.
Marathon lists 30 of the facility’s 514 full-time workers as Detroit residents. Before the expansion that number was 15.
Company representatives say they want to hire more Detroit residents, but are finding it difficult to find qualified job applicants.
