There is something new on the roof of the 200-year-old White house: solar panels that will now provide 6.3 kilowatts of power to the family quarters where the Obamas live.
“Continuing President Obama’s commitment to lead by example to increase the use of clean energy in the U.S., the White House has completed installation of American-made solar panels on the First Family’s residences as part of an energy retrofit that will improve the overall energy efficiency of the building,” White House spokesman Matt Lehrich said Friday in a statement.
The White House estimates that the solar panel installation will “pay for itself in energy savings over the next eight years.”
The announcement comes Friday as President Obama is in California signing new energy efficiency actions, especially encouraging energy efficiency upgrades to old and historic buildings.
