How Findlay Became “Flag City U.S.A.”

(From the City of Findlay)

Happy Flag Day, Findlay!

Did you know?

The designation of Findlay, Ohio, as “Flag City, U.S.A.” began in the 1960s through the vision of Findlay resident John B. Cooke, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Believing that every home should proudly display the American flag on Flag Day, Cooke organized a community-wide effort that brought together residents, businesses, and civic organizations. Through fundraising and volunteer support, 14,000 American flags were distributed throughout the city, creating a powerful display of patriotism.

The movement was further advanced by the Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce, whose leadership helped earn Findlay national recognition as the Flag Capital of the United States on June 14, 1968. The designation was entered into the Congressional Record by Findlay native Congressman Jackson E. Betts, who praised the community’s extraordinary patriotic spirit and commitment to honoring the American flag.

Building on this success, Findlay was officially declared “Flag City, U.S.A.” on May 7, 1974, through House Joint Resolution 1003, introduced by Findlay native Congressman Tennyson Guyer. More than fifty years later, the title remains a lasting symbol of Findlay’s civic pride, patriotism, and dedication to honoring the values represented by the American flag.
