Keeping rural Ohio economically viable

Rural communities across Ohio face no shortage of challenges. From aging infrastructure and limited broadband access to tight farm margins and rising costs, many small towns are searching for ways to remain economically viable while continuing to support agriculture and local families.
According to Charles Tassell, Ohio’s state director of USDA Rural Development, his agency is designed to be one of the key support systems helping those communities navigate today’s challenges.
“When people hear rural development, they sometimes ask, ‘What exactly are you developing?’” Tassell said. “We’re focused on making sure rural communities have opportunities so families can stay there, work there, and continue building those communities.”
Tassell explained that USDA Rural Development differs from agencies like the Farm Service Agency because its focus extends beyond the farm gate itself. Instead, the office works on strengthening the infrastructure and services surrounding agriculture and rural life.… Continue reading
