Dodgers-Guardians game to resume Thursday at 12 p.m. ET

2:04 AM UTC

CLEVELAND — For two innings on Wednesday, Clayton Kershaw looked as sharp as he has all season, striking out four batters and allowing only one hit in the form of a Jos? Ram?rez home run.

He won’t get a chance to build on those stats, however, after the Dodgers’ matchup against the Guardians was suspended in the top of the third inning due to rain, with Los Angeles holding a 3-1 lead. Play will resume Thursday at 12:10 p.m. ET/9:10 a.m. PT, beginning in the top of the third inning.

Prior to the delay, the Dodgers jumped out to an early lead, thanks to a first-inning offensive barrage led by a Will Smith sacrifice fly and a Kik? Hern?ndez double.

Thursday’s regularly scheduled game will follow the completion of Wednesday’s game. Only fans with tickets to the game originally scheduled for Thursday can attend either game of the twin bill. Those fans who had tickets to Wednesday’s rainout can exchange them for one of 15 available game options, including Thursday. Tickets must be exchanged by Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. ET.

Not long into the delay, Kershaw went to the bullpen and threw for about 15 minutes before heading back into the dugout and throwing his hands in the air in disgust.

The Dodgers will finish the resumed game with a bullpen game, while manager Dave Roberts said that he’ll either go with Ryan Pepiot as the starter for the second game, or have him come out of the bullpen after an opener. Pepiot, who was scheduled to start on Thursday and would have required a roster move to be activated off the taxi squad, will be the team’s 27th man.

Roberts said that Kershaw is scheduled to start Tuesday on six days’ rest, but could potentially slot into the weekend series in Boston, depending on the weather.

“Right now it seems very unlikely he’ll pitch in Boston,” Roberts said.

Xzavion Curry got the start for the Guardians and was appearing to settle in after his rough first inning, working around a Mookie Betts single to end a scoreless second inning. The Guardians are still working through who their starter will be in the resumed game on Thursday. Gavin Williams, who was scheduled to start Thursday, will still pitch in Game 2.

Although Thursday will not be a true doubleheader, each team will be allowed to carry a 27th man for the second game. The suspended contest must be played with a 26-man roster.
