Appeals Court Will Hear Argument In Putnam County Double Jeopardy Case

The case of a Putnam County man accused of killing his son more than a decade ago is going back to the Third District Court of Appeals in Lima. The Putnam County Sentinel reports the court has agreed to hear an appeal of its decision to uphold a double jeopardy ruling in the case of Travis Soto. The hearing is set for March 6 of 2019.
Soto pleaded guilty to a child endangerment charge in the death of his son Julio in 2006. He served five years in prison for the conviction. At the time he said he accidentally hit the boy with an ATV. However, in 2016 he allegedly confessed to sheriff’s deputies that he beat the boy to death.
The state charged Soto with murder, but the appeals court ruled in February that the murder charge amounted to getting charged for the same crime twice.
