Bibee keeps Marlins at bay as Guardians secure third straight win

MIAMI — The Guardians got yet another strong pitching performance on Saturday afternoon and held off the Marlins, 4-1, at loanDepot park.

went 6 2/3 innings, giving up a run on five hits and four walks to lead the Guardians to their third straight win.

Cleveland goes for a sweep of the three-game set on Sunday afternoon before hitting the All-Star break, while Miami had its six-game winning streak snapped by Cleveland on Friday.

On Saturday, the Guardians took the lead for good in the fourth after Gabriel Arias and Petey Halpin both singled with one out. Steven Kwan laced a shot into the left field corner for a two-out double, scoring both for a 2-0 lead.

Miami had appeared to take a 1-0 lead in the third after Xavier Edwards singled with two outs, but Kyle Stowers was caught lingering off second on a sharp throw from Kwan to Travis Bazzana before Otto Lopez had crossed home plate.

The Marlins did score in the seventh after Joe Mack doubled with one out, then moved to third on a groundout. Bibee was pulled with two outs, and Miami’s Liam Hicks made it a 2-1 game with a bloop single into left off reliever Shawn Armstrong.

Armstrong ended the inning by getting Lopez — Miami’s first-time All-Star who has been held hitless (0-for-7, walk) so far in this series — to pop out to Arias at third.

The Guardians got a chance to pad their lead in the eighth — and they ended up doing just that.

Kyle Manzardo led off after getting struck by a pitch, then moved to third on Kahlil Watson’s double to left before Marlins reliever William Kempner fanned Arias and Halpin for a pair of quick outs.

But catcher Patrick Bailey (batting .178 coming into the AB) launched a shot over the head of left fielder Heriberto Hernandez that hit the base of the wall and plated two for a 4-1 lead.

Eury Perez, who pitched seven perfect innings last Sunday against the Athletics, got the start for the Marlins and loaded the bases on a pair of hits before recording his first out. Perez (6-6) gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks, throwing 99 pitches in his six innings.
