Governor Signs Bill Into Law Backed By Parents Of Fallen Officer
(ONN) – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 295 into law, a measure supported by the parents of fallen Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter.
Officer Ritter was shot and killed in the line of duty on July 4, 2024, and his parents say a legal loophole almost let his killer go free.
The law now extends competency restoration from one year to three for defendants charged with serious crimes, including aggravated murder.
The law also requires treatment facilities to notify courts when someone refuses medication, adding oversight that wasn’t clearly defined before.
