Partnership Helps Pets Escape Domestic Violence Situations Too

8/7/18 – 4:58 A.M.

Some area organizations are teaming up to make it easier for victims of domestic violence to leave their abusers. Open Arms Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services, Pawsible Angels and Blanchard Valley Veterinary Clinic are working with an anonymous shelter to make sure pets can also escape an abusive home.

Yvette Mains is a program manager at Open Arms. She says they can’t take pets due to allergy concerns. Mains adds when people would find that out, they would sometimes stay with an abuser because they feared for the safety of their pet.

Now, if someone calls Open Arms asking for help, local nonprofit Pawsible Angels will arrange transportation to the veterinary clinic. The veterinarians will examine the animal and send them to the anonymous shelter while the family finds a safe home.
