The Padres have agreed to a deal to acquire starter Mike Clevinger from the Indians, sources told MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi and Mark Feinsand on Monday. The teams have not commented on the deal, which is pending a physical, said Morosi.

According to sources, catcher Austin Hedges, right-hander Cal Quantrill, outfielder Josh Naylor, shortstop Gabriel Arias (No. 7 Padres prospect), left-hander Joey Cantillo (No. 9) and infielder Owen Miller (No. 11) are headed to Cleveland. Along with Clevinger, the Padres get outfielder Greg Allen and a player to be named.

Cleveland placed Clevinger on the restricted list earlier this season along with right-hander Zach Plesac for violating MLB’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols. He had made three starts prior to that in 2020, posting a 3.24 ERA, but with 10 walks in 16 2/3 innings.

In his first start back, on Wednesday against the Twins at Progressive Field, Clevinger gave up two runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out six over six innings in Cleveland’s 6-3 victory. In 2019, though his season was shortened by injury, he posted a career-best 2.71 ERA (2.49 FIP) with a 34 percent strikeout rate in 21 starts.

Clevinger, 29, owns a 3.20 ERA (141 ERA+) and 27 percent strikeout rate in 101 career appearances (88 starts). He is under team control for two more years after this season and is currently arbitration eligible.
