Suspect Killed In Deputy-Involved Shooting During Traffic Stop

(From the Seneca County Sheriff Fred Stevens)

On 07-07-26 at approximately 10:17am Bloomville 2 and Deputies from Seneca County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull over a pickup truck that was being driven by a known person (Jeffrey R. Sergent DOB 3/5/83 of Bloomville) who had Felony Domestic Charges.

They had his vehicle partially blocked in at TR 8 & S.R. 67, with cruisers and the two guardrails on either side of the roadway and began negotiating with him for approximately 10 minutes to step out of the vehicle as he was under arrest for the Felony charges.

Mr. Sergent refused to get out and pulled out several knives from his pocket during the negotiating but never got out of the vehicle. He rolled his windows up and refused to speak. As more deputies arrived, he without warning, put the vehicle in reverse and tried to escape but the Bloomville PD vehicle had him blocked so he put it in drive and with deputies still in front and to the side of his vehicle stuck along the guard rail they fired into the vehicle striking him before he could run one of them over.

The vehicle did strike one of the deputies cruisers front end push bar hard enough to bend it but they were able to move out of the way.

EMS was called to the scene, but deputies had tried to find a pulse and did not locate one and that was confirmed by EMS when they arrived.

One of the deputies was treated for injury to his hand due to broken glass.

The Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, BCI&I, was contacted to come process the scene and do the Deputy involved Shooting.

The deputies will be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
