FPD On Bicycle, E-Bike, And Scooter Safety

Public Safety Message: Bicycle, E-Bike, and Scooter Safety in Ohio
As the weather warms and more people take to Ohio’s roads and trails, we are seeing an increase in the use of bicycles, electric bicycles (e-bikes), and electric scooters. While these are great options for recreation and transportation, they also require riders to understand and follow Ohio’s traffic laws to help prevent serious injuries and crashes.
Under Ohio law, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. Riders must obey all traffic signs and signals, travel in the same direction as traffic, use proper hand signals when turning or stopping, and ride as close to the right side of the roadway as is practical, except when avoiding hazards, preparing for a left turn, or when the lane is too narrow to safely share with a motor vehicle. When riding after dark, bicycles must be equipped with a white front light visible from at least 500 feet and a red rear reflector or flashing red light visible from at least 600 feet.
Electric bicycles are divided into three classes under Ohio law. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are limited to speeds of 20 mph, while Class 3 e-bikes can assist riders up to 28 mph. Riders of Class 3 e-bikes must be at least 16 years of age and are required to wear a properly fitted helmet. Because e-bikes can travel at higher speeds, riders should use extra caution around pedestrians, intersections, and driveways.
Electric scooters have become increasingly popular throughout Ohio. Riders should operate scooters responsibly by obeying traffic laws, yielding to pedestrians, and using lights or reflective equipment when riding after dark. Riders should also be aware that cities and local jurisdictions may have additional ordinances regulating where scooters may be operated.
Safety Reminders
- Wear a properly fitted helmet every time you ride. • Stay alert and avoid distractions such as cell phones or headphones that limit your ability to hear traffic. • Wear bright or reflective clothing to increase your visibility. • Make eye contact with drivers whenever possible before crossing intersections. • Ride predictably and signal your intentions well in advance. • Inspect your bicycle, e-bike, or scooter before every ride, paying close attention to brakes, tires, lights, and battery systems.
A Reminder for Motorists
Drivers also play an important role in keeping our roadways safe. Ohio law requires motorists to provide at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicycle. Always check mirrors and blind spots before turning or opening a vehicle door, remain alert for riders at intersections and crosswalks, and remember that bicyclists have the same legal right to use the roadway as other vehicles.
Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re behind the wheel of a vehicle or riding a bicycle, e-bike, or scooter, following the law, staying alert, and showing courtesy to others can prevent crashes and save lives. Together, we can make Ohio’s roads safer for everyone. For more information, visit: https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/traveling/bicycling-and-pedestrians/resources/ebikes
