Update – 2/23/18 – 5:07 A.M. (Additional Details)

Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies took a 16-year-old McComb High School Student into custody Thursday. Investigators say other students in the school heard the boy say he was going to shoot people. Lt. Chris Bell tells the Courier the student did not have a weapon or access to weapons at home.

Superintendent Tony Fenstermaker says there was no evidence of an immediate threat. As of 4 p.m. Thursday the school had not mentioned the incident to parents.

Students first told Principal Jeremy Herr, who passed the information on to Deputy Shane Leeth, a school resource officer assigned to McComb. Leeth was already at the school and found the student quickly.

The incident remains under investigation.
