Findlay Family YMCA Holding Youth Triathlon

(From Findlay Family YMCA)

Back by popular demand, the Findlay Family YMCA will host a Youth Triathlon this summer! Open to participants ages 6-18, the event will take place at Riverside Park on Saturday, July 25, at 8 a.m.

With three fun sports- swimming, biking, and running – triathlons offer kids the chance to learn a variety of exercise skills and enhance fitness skills with the larger goal of developing self-esteem, teamwork, goal setting, self-discipline, friendly competition, and a lifelong passion for physical activity.

This event is appropriate for all skill levels – both as an introduction to the sport for beginners and as a challenge for the serious competitor. It will be unsanctioned, thereby eliminating extra registration fees from USA Triathlon.

Boys and girls will compete separately in their age groups. Waves will start every 15 minutes, from oldest to youngest. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group. Age groups and distances include:

  • Ages 6-8: 50-yard swim, 1.25-mile bike, .95-mile run

  • Ages 9-10: 100-yard swim, 1.25-mile bike, .95-mile run
  • Ages 11-12: 200-yard swim, 4-mile bike, 1-mile run
  • Ages 13-14: 300-yard swim, 8-mile bike, 2-mile run
  • Ages 15-18: 400-yard swim, 12-mile bike, 3-mile run

The entry fee is $30 for all participants, regardless of Y membership. Proceeds will benefit the Y’s Annual Campaign, which funds most of our programming.

For those who register, free, volunteer-led, bi-weekly training clinics will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning June 30, at 5:30 p.m. at Riverside Park; no clinic will be held July 2. No matter their experience level, we’ll help kids prepare for the big day by reviewing the basics, instilling confidence, and ensuring they have fun.

Also, volunteers are needed for activities such as helping with training clinics, handing out race packets and snacks, and basic monitoring at Riverside Pool and along the bike and running courses during the event. If you can volunteer, contact Jerry McNamee, Y Senior Program Director, at [email protected] or at 419-422-4424 ext. 219.
